The English language program seeks to develop the areas of reading, writing, listening and speaking through using rich authentic literature and theme reading anthologies. The reading program offers a rich variety of genres with an emphasis on fiction and non-fiction at this age level. The reading material makes content connections with science and social studies to support and integrate the instructional focus. Since each child has a different language experience that they bring with them to class, the child's present developmental level is used as an initial point of departure within the spiraling curriculum. The flexible material and resources of the program meet a wide range of teaching and learning needs by differentiating instruction for below- on - and above level, lessons for all readers. It provides practice in comprehension, phonics, vocabulary, spelling, grammar and writing. Information Technology is also a fundamental part of the classroom experience and is integrated within all areas of the program through the use of interactive software.. Through the English language program, children explore, develop, express meaningful ideas and make connections to their personal experiences. The program is designed to increase both fluency and accuracy in language learning. A wide range of assessment tools are used to provide multiple perspectives on learning and growth. Both the process and the product are valued.
